The Mind/Body Connection
What Does Suffering Have To Do With Illness?

Where does suffering start: with illness, or in the reaction to it? What does mindfulness have to do with dealing with suffering? Where and how does one experience the mind/body connection? Are there any useful techniques we can learn to deal with our illness and suffering?

These are the kinds of questions we will explore in this 5-session discussion course looking at how to find a way to alleviate suffering by closely observing how our mind responds to input of any kind: what we see, hear, feel, and touch. We will discuss the mind/body connection in our everyday lives and how we may become listeners without suffering. Recommended, but not required reading is Buddhism Without Beliefs by Stephen Batchelor.

$50 for the five sessions. Taught by Chas Meyers, Licensed Acupuncturist, Qigong teacher, and ordained Zen Monk.

To register, call the WHRC at 650-2600.

Bringing the Benefits of Yoga Home:
How to Develop a Personal Yoga Practice
with Jill Johnson and Diana Shannon

Establishing and maintaining a personal yoga practice can be challenging for beginning and experienced students alike. Not knowing how, when, where, and what poses to practice in the context of existing family and work commitments all conspire against our best intentions. This workshop will teach you how to start or invigorate an existing home practice so that you can experience the many benefits of yoga beyond the classroom. It will provide a step-by-step framework within which to develop your practice each day, asana cards for reference and learning, handouts for reinforcing key principles and concepts, and sample sequences to jumpstart your nascent efforts. The workshop will also include lively group discussions and ideas for eliminating the many physical, mental, and emotional obstacles. This workshop is appropriate for beginning yoga students as well as more experienced students who are not yet consistent in a home practice. $50

To register, mail your check made payable to AHA to Ancient Healing Arts, PO Box 735, Lebanon, NH 03766.

Building Strength in the Upper Body
with Karin Stephan

Are you interested in working on yoga poses which involve upper
body strength but are not sure how to get there? Or are you already
working on some of them but want to learn others or perfect the
ones you already know, perhaps adding variations? Do you think your
limitations are due to lack of strength?

Contrary to what you may think, you don’t have to be strong to
be strong. You have to be balanced to be strong. This workshop is
designed for students who wish to improve their ability to practice
handstands, forearm balances, headstands, shoulderstands and
backbends by better understanding their individual asymmetries in the
upper body and by learning how to correct them. Weaving in and out
of asanas which develop alignment and those which develop strength,
we will learn how to create an internal muscular balance allowing us
to do these poses with grace and ease.

The schedule is:

  • Saturday, May 31, 10 am – 1 pm, 3 – 5 pm
  • Sunday, June 1, 10 am – 1 pm

Revitalizing Health Through Inner Strength
Pelvic Floor Workshop for Women by Susanne Kemmerer

Susanne will first assess particular needs of the students. She will then introduce and elaborate on her unique approach to revitalize the health through inner strength originating from what the Japanese call Hara and the Yogis call Mula Bandha.

Her unique method involves a hands-on approach to greater understanding of the three layers of the pelvic floor, including how to access each layer, and apply that understanding to yoga postures as well as to daily life.

Over the last twelve years this approach has shown remarkable success in dealing with various challenges in men and women with regard to:

  • Lower back problems
  • SI Joint pain
  • Hip joint pain
  • Neck problems
  • Incontinence
  • Descending organs
  • Post delivery issues

Susanne’s work readily dovetails with Ramanand Patel’s work on mula bandha. Cost is $180. Limited to 25 participants.

To register, mail your check made payable to AHA to Ancient Healing Arts, PO Box 735, Lebanon, NH 03766.
